Sliver City Main Street
About
Welcome to the Silver City Main Street, located along West National Avenue in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 31st Street to Miller Park Way. Known as the Inter-
National district because of its diverse array of business owners, Silver City
draws its name from the era of our history when workers from the industrial
Menomonee Valley would spend their silver dollars at National Avenue
businesses after a hard week’s work.
The Silver City District was selected as one of four Main Street
Milwaukee districts in February 2005.  The Main Street Milwaukee
program is a partnership between the
City of Milwaukee
Community Development Block Grant office and Local Initiatives
Support Corporation.  CDBG funds and LISC funds work in
public-private partnership to provide operating support for the
programs. An intergovernmental agreement between the City of
Milwaukee and the
Village of West Milwaukee creates additional
opportunities for West Milwaukee businesses and a gateway
entrance from Miller Park Way into the Silver City district. The
Silver City District Main Street is managed through a partnership
with
Layton Boulevard West Neighbors.

The Silver City Main Street uses the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 4-point approach to community
revitalization.  Four groups of community volunteers work to bring about change by working with business
owners to improve aesthetics, recruit complimentary businesses, create a positive image of the district and
promote individual businesses. The Organization Committee ensures that committee work plans fit the Main
Street vision and that there is adequate funding to complete those work plans.
FUN FACTS
The Silver City Weave represents the weaving together of different nationalities in the Silver
City District.  Today, business owners in the Silver City district represent heritage of German,
Hmong, Ivory Coast, Lao, Mexican, Native American, Nicaraguan, Peruvian, Polish, Puerto
Rican, Thai, and Vietnamese roots.
Mission Statement:
The purpose of the Silver City Main Street is to enhance the quality of life for the citizens and businesses
of the Main Street district.  Silver City Main Street works with both the public and private sectors to
restore the vitality once common in the commercial district by enhancing our community identity and heritage,
fostering a center of activity, and ensuring economic stability through concentrated efforts in
organization, promotion, design and business development.
In May 2005, Silver City Main Street developed a strategic plan with the assistance of Downtown
Professionals network.
